Students of All Ages and LevelsI have been teaching piano to students of all ages for over 25 years. My teaching style is flexible and relaxing. I emphasize musical literacy: learning how to read notes, counting, and introductory musical notation. A beginning student should feel confident in learning basic musical skills as the key to the enjoyment of learning piano.
Classical and PopularIt is very important for students to enjoy the music they are studying. I choose piano books which are fun. As the student advances, both popular songs and traditional classical are part of the lesson. My students enjoy well known pop tunes, Broadway favorites, and traditional lesson book songs which help them progress. Students eventually may also choose to study only popular music.
ImprovisationI teach blues piano, Jazz, and reading chords with a melody. I emphasize choosing familiar music which a student will find appealing.
Music TheoryUnderstanding musical structure is essential to music literacy and greatly enhances the joy of learning piano. I teach basic theory, and analysis of both classical and popular compositions. If the student is inclined towards composing, I will help with notating original musical ideas.
About me:I studied at the Eastman School of Music and performed with the Boston Pops as a soloist. In addition to teaching, I play Classical, Jazz, Show Tunes, and Contemporary Songs at weddings, corporate functions, and parties.
