I have been teaching piano to students of all ages for over 30 years.
My teaching style is flexible, relaxing, and geared to the needs of the student.
I emphasize musical literacy: learning how to read notes, counting, and introductory musical notation.
A beginning student should feel confident in learning basic musical skills as the key to the enjoyment of learning piano.
My Teaching Approach
I am a low-key flexible teacher who enjoys working with the individual strengths of the student.
I will teach a student at their pace and bring out their personal skills to best enjoy the lessons
Classical and Popular
It is very important for students to enjoy the music they are studying. I choose piano books which are fun. As the student advances, both popular songs and traditional classical are part of the lesson.
My students enjoy well known pop tunes, Broadway favorites, and traditional lesson book songs which help them progress. Students eventually may also choose to study only popular music
I teach blues piano, Jazz, and reading chords with a melody. I emphasize choosing familiar music which a student will find appealing.
I also teach beginning composition and encourage students to notate their musical ideas.
Understanding musical structure is essential to music literacy and greatly enhances the joy of learning piano. I teach basic theory, and analysis of both classical and popular compositions.
I studied at the Eastman School of Music and performed with the Boston Pops as a soloist. In addition to teaching, I play Classical, Jazz, Show Tunes, and Contemporary Songs at weddings, corporate functions, and parties.
I look forward to hearing from you!
